Sorry
Mea culpa, but I honestly have been busy the past week. In a rather sadistic turn of events, we got our reading assignments at Convocation Tuesday night for all four classes (rhetoric, theology, natural philosophy, and Latin) which had to be done by 8 a.m. the next morning. When you factor in the reception after Convocation ... well, it was a late night. It seems much longer than it actually has been, for several reasons.
In the past 48 hours, I've read ...
1. Augustine's Confessions (350 pages).
2. Augustine's City of God (220 pages down, 200 more to go to complete this week's assignment).
3. The Latin readings from Wheelock's.
4. The first three books of Cicero's Rhetorica Ad Herennium (one more to go).
5. Selections from English Grammer for Students of Latin.
6. Fifty pages from Lives of a Cell (fascinating prose, coming from a scientist).
7. Sixty pages of The Soul of Science.
We won't even go into the memorization in Latin or the Heidelberg. I'm hoping to finish up my reading assignments a bit early next week, but even then, I'll probably feel obligated in my horrid O.C. way to get a head start on Calvin's Institutes or the final books of the Civitas Dei
More diligence on my part will (may?) come soon.

Davey, Blessings on your freshman year! Glad to read NSA blogs. Reminds me of my time in Moscow and at NSA. I know it's evil...but it amused me to see the faces of the freshman
as they received their assignments at Convocation. :~) I too received them and
was up long hours completing them my freshman year. Have fun at the picnic. It's
usually a blast. Make time to see people and not just the inside of your books.
Part of learning and living in Moscow is being a part of the community and the
fellowship it brings. Enjoy!

Mrs. Barach, :) Thanks for the encouragement. I didn't mind the
assignments much, actually. I still think NSA is run by a bunch of sadists,
though. You can quote me.

Wow, you did a lot in two days. I wasn't assigned that much reading right off my
freshman year.

Josh - The rhetoric and lordship readings aren't due until Friday, but I just prefer
to get them done up front and leave time - if necessary (please, no!) - to
reread stuff.

If you can re-read stuff, absolutely go with it. That helped immensely with
Greek; I missed a lot interesting things on the first go-thru or if I contented
myself with the lecturer's in-class reading of portions of the chapter. But
there's so much material that if you can go back and unmuddle the mind a bit you
might stand a better chance of recalling what you read later. Invaluable
preparation for exams, anyway. But surely, you've found attractions outside
school to pursue right? Getting assignments done early leaves great opportunity
to attend Friday social events guilt-free at least.

hi davey. you don't know me, but i know you, through Mr. Jonathan O'Brien. I went to undergrad with him. I know this is sort of a round about way of doing this, but if you
could pass his email along to me, or mine to him of course, I would really
appreciate it. My old email account petered out, and I have no way to contact
him, and I miss him very much. He has always spoken very highly of you...he
seems to think you are some sort of a prodigy. :) God bless you in your studies.
Sounds like you have quite a load! Thanks so much...melissa

Hi! I don't see how you can
keep up with all that reading and still blog! But please try to keep it up. I
like to read about someone's first experiences at NSA, since I also hope to go.
It's fun to hear about it. God bless your schoolyear!
